Scientific Linux to end shipment and embrace CentOS

This is good news if you ask me as we have too many distributions and both Scientific Linux and CentOS are forks of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The transition will be painless as developers from both communities win in all cases.

post on the Scientific Linux announcement mailing list indicates that there will not be a release of Scientific Linux 8. The project plans to deploy CentOS 8 instead and modify it as required to suit the team’s needs. “Toward that end, we will deploy CentOS 8 in our scientific computing environments rather than develop Scientific Linux 8. We will collaborate with CERN and other labs to help make CentOS an even better platform for high-energy physics computing. Fermilab will continue to support Scientific Linux 6 and 7 through the remainder of their respective lifecycles.”
